What's on the menu in August and September?

The sloppy joes fromquite a while back are a perennial favorite, so we have a reprise.

Irene was for a variety of reasons unable to participate heavily in the planning, so...

Joe and I sketched out the meals for the next three weeks on a Coldwell Banker notepad garnished from his house-hunting travels in Los Angeles with Irene. With the sole exception of Marian Burros "Eating Well is the Best Revenge," all the cookbooks have been packed.

Newby's mystery stew
Let me reveal the recipe of Newby's Mystery Stew right here and now. We call it that because it comes from page 117 of a mystery, Here's to the Newly Dead by B.J. Oliphant, which Newby had just finished reading when she and her husband Don visited us in Maine this August.

"Two pounds smoked or Polish sausage. One large can kidneey beans, drained. One large can whole tomatoes, tomotoes broken up. One can garbanzo beans. Carrots, already peeled and shaped for the lazy cook (me). Additional water or tomato juice as needed. All simmered for half an hour or so, with mushrooms and shredded cabbage and a handful of pasta added shortly before eating. Garlic bread. Red wine"

Stay tuned, we'll let you know how it turns out.
