stay hungry . . . . . oct 3 2003 — act12.dat

As one of the few people who has actually seen the movie Stay Hungry, starring Arnold Schartzenegger, I feel safe in saying that his candidacy for the governor of California is absurd on the face of it.

One particularly characteristic image from the movie stays with me. A scantily clad bodybuilder groupie is suspended upside down in "gravity boots", a weight loss and conditioning fad that was popular at the time of the movie's release. The big strong men push her back and forth as she swings helplessly back and forth, shrieking her displeasure.

At least I think it was something like that.

The movie shares something else with Arnold's current campaign. The actual movie didn't live up to the promise of its advertising trailers.

Conservative . . . . . oct 1 2003 — act11.dat

What's more important than the amount of money spent on an election? Knowing what you're talking about (and listening to!) and getting your terms straight. Here's a good characterization of the meaning of the terms Conservative and Reactionary

a brief quote from the article: "These are the voices of reaction. Their primary political tools are deceit, false historical memory, and an invented patriotic fervor for a nation that never existed and should never come to be. ."
