Seasonal Smoke and Times Mirrors . . . . . oct 27 2003 — ob59.dat

A pall of smoke in West Los Angeles made it prudent to stay indoors yesterday. Even though the fires were miles away, it still made sense to keep all the doors and windows closed. It was a great day to read the Newspaper, in a city where people watch a lot of TV, even in their cars.

It's true, We did see someone watching television in their car in the Harbor Freeway last night, driving home from a wedding in Pasadena. At least I assumed they were watching it; certainly it was turned on.

But back to the NY Times. Frank Rich's provocative article in the Times is essential reading, here's a link in case you missed it: Why are we back in Vietnam? He ends up saying that we're not, really. Not really. But like a lot of other people, he keeps turning up parallels.

In other links, The Shifted Librarian (we always read The Shifted Librarian) had a letter published by the NY Times, and to her discomfiture, it was (say it out loud) edited a bit. The big difference between what she wrote and what the Times printed? She knows that USA PATRIOT Act is an acronym, and the Times does not. What was her link all about? Signs that might be, and are in fact, placed in libraries.
