Barry's Boogers . . . . . jan 8 2004 — bookish102.dat

Why isn't Dave Barry more serious? After reading his most recent tour-de-force, "Boogers are My Beat," you just might be grateful that Dave isn't serious more often. Why such a prediction? There isn't anything much more serious than the last two chapters. One was written after September 11 2001 and the second a year later, commemorating the passengers of Flight 93, which slammed into the Pennsylvania countryside, rather than the White House, at 500 miles an hour. When you read this chapter, you'll cry.

Fortunately, though, when you read the rest of the book, you'll laugh. There's just something about the way Dave Barry looks at things that will crack you up. For one thing, he exaggerates tremendously. Exaggeration is always funny, as in "my dog barfed 3 full gallons of dogfood into my new car, just one day after I bought it". Ha ha! Also, Dave pretends to say one absurd thing, but then he corrects it with the truth, like this: "When airport security found a nailfile in my luggage, what did they do? They called me over and gave me a certificate congratulating me on my foresightfulness. No, actually they asked me to wait in a room festooned with posters like this one: "TSA bulletin 144: preparing for the body cavity search."

If you want to bend over (laughing!), make sure you grab a copy of Boogers Are My Beat [buy at amazon] . by Dave Barry. It's hilariously funny and very serious too; you'll laugh and you'll cry. Thanks, Dave.
