Anthropology Lives . . . . . feb 29 2004 — amwalk87.dat

Walking without my eyeglasses I thought I saw a guy in a wheelchair wheeling himself down the middle of Venice Boulevard here in Los Angeles. This street is three lanes in each direction plus a palm-tree-covered median. Could I believe my eyes? I thought so, because...

there's a guy I've met who wheels himself around the neighborhood. He hit me up for some spare change a couple of times, and also...he asked about my dog. They got to know each other okay.

I gave him a wave, wheeling down the middle of what I had thought of as a cars-only street. He waved back, because he recognized me and my dog. Well, either he waved back, or he was signalling a left turn, swerving smoothly over into the left turn lane.

It was a nice morning, a good morning for a walk with the dog.
