The Slum
by Aluisio Azevedo

The Slum, first published in Portuguese in 1890, is filled to overflowing with the busy life of a Brazilian slum. Azevedo was a sketch artist, and worked in Rio as an illustrator and caricaturist. While researching his novels he would visit neighborhoods in the city and, dressed in local clothing, make drawings of people in their daily life.

His fine eye for detail translates into a vibrant description of life in a thriving Brazilian slum, a bustling beehive of activity overseen and developed by Joao Romao, slumlord and lover of the black slave Bertolezzo, who assists him in running the eatery and general store.

The clarity and immediacy of Azevedo's description of slum life extends to his portrayal of short scenes of intense drama and tragedy. This book remains popular in Brazil to this day, and it is easy to see why, since it remains accessible and powerful across 120 years and a translation into English.

Why is it powerful and accessible? It's not just the gift of description and ability to bring crowd scenes to life: The Slum is about fascinating topics: greed, desire, and passions in the relationships of men and women.

Samba your way over to amazon.com, pick up a copy of The Slum by Aluisio Azevedo and become a little more Brazilian.
