By the time I reached page 49 of The Midnight Examiner, I suddenly realized it was the funniest book I had ever read. About 50 pages after that, I wanted to start over and laugh all over again. (Funniest Book on Earth Nearly Killed Me, Editor Claims). And I was only about halfway through this somewhat slapstick voodoo-woman-assisted adventure story.
I think maybe the reason Kotswinkle has such a strong effect is that
his sentences are just about perfect. (In The Game of Thirty, they are
perfect.) Then again maybe it's his zany imagination and sense of circumstance,
not to mention his gift for sharp, surprising, funny dialogue
The Midnight Examiner's cast of characters, writers for what might loosely
be called a conglomerate of tabloids, are outlandish yet sympathetic,
ridiculous yet real as they battle the mob for the life and honor of...
...a kidnapped poet?
Better snicker, giggle and guffaw your way over to amazon.com and grab a copy of The Midnight Examiner A word to this wise? Hang onto it tight. My Kotzwinkle books have always had a tendency to disappear.
