The Far Shore of Time
by Frederik Pohl

This was a funny book, filled with weird aliens and technology so advanced there is no need to even try to explain it.

The hero, Dan Dannerman lately of the FBI on earth, befriends some aliens and battles others in an attempt to get back to earth, save it, and be reunited with the woman he loves.

On the way he keeps running into various clones of both himself and the woman, but he's never in any real trouble, except for a little torture from time to time.

I don't really remember reading any Pohl before and I probably won't again because it's too silly. He has an enjoyable conversational style though, and I enjoyed this one right through to the end.

I don't want to give anything away, but in the end Earth was saved. As for whether the guy gets the girl, well, you'll just have to read it yourself.
